It’s fascinating how design influences our decisions every day—often without us even realizing it. The excerpt below, from Subliminal by Leonard Mlodinow, is a powerful reminder of why we’re so intentional with every detail we create.
“…Participants were asked to read a recipe for a Japanese lunch dish, then rate how much effort and skill they thought it would take—and how likely they were to try making it at home. When the recipe was printed in a hard-to-read font, people rated the task as more difficult and said they were less likely to attempt it.
Researchers ran the same test with an exercise routine and got the same results: when instructions were harder to read, the exercises seemed more intimidating, and people said they were less likely to try them.
Psychologists call this the ‘fluency effect’—when information is harder to process visually, we assume the task itself is harder, too.”
So, why does this matter to your business?
Because your brand’s design—from your logo to your business cards to your website—can either invite people in or quietly push them away. That’s why professional design is about way more than making things look nice.
Sometimes we get asked, “Why not just use a quick template from a site like VistaPrint?” And sure, it’s tempting—but good design is about how it feels, not just how it looks. A poorly chosen font, clunky layout, or mismatched color palette can subconsciously signal that your business is confusing, outdated, or untrustworthy.
At Concept Design Studios, we design with both conscious and unconscious perception in mind. We consider how your branding will actually be received—how easy it is to read, how modern it feels, and what kind of emotional response it creates.
It’s not just art—it’s psychology. And it’s why investing in thoughtful, professional design isn’t an extra—it’s essential.
